Honestly, I work hard – maybe too hard.
“Hi my name is Francis. When I started out the work was manageable, fun almost – but I was new then and everyone treated me nice.
But throughout the year I was constantly falling ill, probably due to the freezing temperatures in the office (my mum always told me I had a weak immune system) and the amount of fast food I was eating, and had to do work on the weekends regularly.
That’s when it all changed I think – my immediate boss started to be cold towards me, and my colleagues often made backhanded compliments whenever they can when I’m around – at this point, I’m only in the office only 2 to 3 times a week.
Then it started. Everyday I would wake up in the morning feeling super anxious thinking about work – i’d just spend 30 minutes in the shower dreading the next 8 hours. It wasn’t the work necessarily, more about the toxic environment that I was in.
What I noticed was that it was as if everyone in the company wanted their colleague to fumble and fail – everyone forgets that they’re on the same team.
For example, one of our sales person provided the wrong information about our product to a client and instead of giving her proper feedback and guidance, everyone else in her team were just pushing the blame to her and openly mocked her in the office.
But anyways, i shrugged it off and tried to compensate for my absence by staying late into the night when i do come into office, but that just left me frustrated and exhausted as soon as I get home. I was burned out.
But don’t worry, this story has sort of a happy ending – I handed in my resignation 7 months into the job and I felt sooo free after that. Now, this is my first job ever and I don’t know what to expect next. I rushed into the job because the pay was good and they are a reputable company, but even that didn’t keep me from going.
What I took away from this experience is that you must weigh your options and take good care of your mental and physical health because really, as much as I didn’t like the office culture there, I am also to blame for not managing stress and my wellbeing properly.”
