Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.” Confidence is a skill that should never be underestimated. The best ideas could be misunderstood without the right delivery. Mr. Ford was absolutely correct when he stated the aforementioned quote; for no airplanes would have conquered the skies if The Wright Brothers did not imagine it and we would still live in the dark if Thomas Edison did not have confidence that his bulbs will work even after failing a few thousand times. Becoming more confident is a challenge to many, however the more confident you become, the more success you attract!
What I mean to say is all forms of productive processes start with the mind; with one’s thoughts. A person who does not have the ability to have faith in their thoughts and approach it with confidence; will never be able to perform at their fullest potential. So, here are five simple hacks which will help you become more confident in your workplace.
FIVE HACKS TO BE MORE CONFIDENT
Simply controlling your breath can do wonders for you! Relax, just breathe
Negative thoughts and negative self-talk can lead to you becoming less confident. All those negative thoughts can weigh you down.
Mindfulness is an important element in helping you change yourself from a person with low self-esteem to someone who is more confident. Simple breathing techniques with even two minutes of regular practice can have phenomenal effects on your way of thinking. According to psychotherapists, “It will not eliminate life’s pressures but, with practice, it can help us respond to them in a calmer manner that benefits our mind and body.”
To practice mindfulness you can just divert your attention to your breathing; i.e. watch your breath! Do this for at least two minutes every day, and you’ll be on your way to gaining more confidence! Remember that your thoughts will try to take you away from the breathing, but you have to bring your focus back to your breathing. This way, you can clear your mind of all those negative thoughts that were weighing you down in the first place.
From now on, before you say anything or do anything, try taking a deep breath! Trust me, it works wonders.
2. Focus on Your Strengths
Learn to leverage your strongest suits and build on them
At times when you do not feel confident enough; specifically, in a professional context, focus on your strengths and ignore your weaknesses. Think of yourself from your client/customer’s perspective, are they here to buy your weaknesses? You were chosen to be in the current role because you are good at something that relates to the role.
I am not suggesting that you adopt this philosophy as a long-term solution, but during moments of confusion and self-doubt, it is safer for both you and your associates if you focus more on your strength.
This not only means there is a higher chance of a better performance from you regardless of your mental state but will also work like a charm. When you perform better, specifically in an intense situation, your self-worth and self-esteem will be monumentally increased. This will build a solid foundation for your future growth!
Think of it this way: when you really focus on your strengths, more focus is more confidence, and more confidence is more power! Once you overcome a low situation you will feel energized, pushing you towards growth, and you will be ready to take care of your weaknesses! One of your best bets to feel more confident in a bewildering situation is to do what you do best. So momentarily remove your weaknesses from your mind and focus only on YOUR STRENGTHS!
Draw a clear mental picture of a more confident you
“I wrote myself a check for ten million dollars for acting services rendered and dated it Thanksgiving 1995. I put it in my wallet and it deteriorated. And then, just before Thanksgiving 1995, I found out I was going to make ten million dollars for Dumb & Dumber” – Jim Carrey once told Oprah.
That, my friends, is the POWER OF VISUALIZATION! Greats like Jim Carrey, Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith and many others have accredited visualization techniques for their success.
Visualizing a version of yourself which is more confident than how you are now will make life much easier as your mind will be primed to act in certain ways. For visualization techniques to work as good as the real deal, one should do it in a disciplined manner on a regular basis. The power of visualization techniques has been proven by science, and any practice backed by visualization can lead to results in a more efficient and effective manner than without it.
4. Dress to Impress
Dress in a way which makes you feel better about yourself
Research suggests clothing plays a vital role in your self-esteem! More self-esteem = More confidence!
The way you dress should not be based on trends or other people’s opinions but only on your own view of yourself. If you feel more confident wearing a leather jacket and black jeans, and your workplace allows that; why not? Your clothing should always be well thought out to make you feel comfortable. It should be contextual and have elements of your personal style. A contextual approach towards dressing up, accenting your strengths, considering your shape, and mindfully choosing colors which suit you can never go wrong! Try it out!
5. Fake it
They say faking a smile makes you happy; so let’s try faking confidence!
No, I didn’t mean “be a fake person”. However, just as how faking a smile can make you feel happier, faking confidence can make you genuinely feel more confident. Be a shameless person and stop overthinking; get yourself out there and act like you own the world; sooner or later results will come.
However, do be smart about it and do not mistake this false act of being more confident as being arrogant or condescending. Do give everyone the same respect you want to be treated with and understand the fine line between confidence and over-confidence.
For getting better at faking confidence, study about leaders, observe them and emulate what they do. The better you can emulate their body language, the tone of their voice, the way of dressing up, facial expressions and so on the better you will get. Remember, good artists copy and great artists steal!
Being more confident is a critical aspect of attracting success; always remember success is not something you achieve but it is rather something you attract by becoming worthy of it.
Being mindful can help you not only with your confidence but all other aspects of life, it will also make the other steps to become confident easier. Try to put your visualization session and meditation back to back. Once you are in a meditative state, visualization becomes more vivid, hence you will have a clear vision of your more confident self that you ultimately want to become. Focusing on your strength will ensure a positive state of mind and being well dressed will never go wrong!
Last but not least, remember if all fails, keep faking it till you make it!
